OBJECTIVE AND COMPETENCY 0166-
The objective of this course is to further develop visual literacy using the elements and principles of two-dimensional design,
with emphasis on refinement of colour perception through experimentation with the properties and qualities of colour.

Basic materials:

Good quality acrylic paint or gouache (You may buy colours individually or in a set : Cadmium Red hue, Ultramarine or Thalo Blue, Cadmium Yellow hue, Alizarin Crimson, White, Green, Paynes Grey*, Quinachrinome Violet*, Burnt Umber*)
Select two or three large brushes, flats and rounds, nylon or hogs hair, #6 flat, #12 flat, #10 round, #8 round, #6 round.
Basic set of Watercolour paints, tubes or cakes as good quality as possible, such as: Winsor Newton, Holbein, Rembrandt. Individual watercolour papers,
Sabeline or nylon watercolour brushes (app. #8-#10 round, #10-#12 flat)
1 big mixing palette, smooth plastic surface, plastic or tear-away sheets as well as a watercolour palette
One fine point black felt pen
One roll of 1/2" masking tape
Sketchbook
Tracing paper pad 9" X 12"

Set of pencils (HB, 2B, 4B)
Plain white eraser
Small utility knife with snap off blades
Glue sticks
One can of workable fixative*
Pencil sharpener*
Metal ruler (12")
Scissors*
Two plastic water containers (1 l. yoghurt or ice cream containers)
Paper towels or rags as needed*
Mayfair paper as needed
Photographs and old magazines
Suitable clothing or an apron
Tool box to keep you materials

Week 1: (January 20)

Introduction to course. Review of design principles.

Week 2: (January 29)

First property of colour: Value. Colour mixing. Value scale in-class exercises for red, blue and yellow.
Tear Sheets: Achromatic and Monochromatic
Homework: Monochromatic value collage.

Week 3: (February 3)

Lecture: Physical properties of colour. Value continued. High value (tints), low value (shades), high contrast, monochromatic colour harmony/scheme.
Assignment #1: Line/Monochromatic and Achromatic colour.

Week 4: (February 10)

Second property of colour: Hue. Primaries, secondaries, tertiaries; warm - cool colours.
Workbook exercises. Colour wheel in gouache/designer colours.
Homework: Colour wheel in collage.

Week 5: (February 17)

Assignment #1 due. Class discussion of written appreciations.
Tear Sheets: Warm/cool use of colour.

Week 6: (February 24)

Lecture: Colour perception. Third property of colour: Intensity. Ways to contrast colour: dark - light, warm - cool, dull –bright, complementary. Workbook exercises. Intensity charts, colour samples.
Tear Sheets: Dark/light, dull/bright/complementary.
Assignment #2: Shape/Value/Complementary colours

Week 7: (March 3)

Ways to alter colour. Sketchbook exercises: Simultaneous contrast The Bezold Effect.

Week 8: (March 10)

Assignment #2 due:

Class discussion and exercises.

March 16-20 Mid-term Break

Week 9: (March 24)

Lecture: Rhythm and repetition/ Proportion
Colour harmonies/schemes: Analogous and primary triadic.
Tear Sheets: Analogous, triads.
Homework: Colour value collage.

Week 10: (April 7)

Lecture: Textural effects Colour harmonies/schemes: Split - complementary and tetradic.
Assignment #3: Texture/Analogous, triadic and colour contrast.

Week 11: (April 14)

Lecture: Value. Split - complementary and tetradic harmonies.
Tear Sheets: Triadic and tetradic

Week 12: (April 21)

Assignment #3 due: Class discussion and written appreciations.
Homework: Written proposal for final project.

Week 13: (April 28)

Lecture: Colour harmonies: psychological, social, emotional and subjective. Optical mixture of colour.

Week 14: (May 5)

Final project.

Week 15: (May 12)

Presentation and discussion of final projects.
