A basic set of acrylics should include (150mL/5 oz tubes or 250 ml jars): |
Brushes: #12 flat and #10 round (true bristle) Bring at least four sheets of Mayfair (white) paper to each class (approx. 22" x 18"). Two empty 1litre yogourt containers (No glass) Palette: water-resistant, white, smooth surface (approx. 18" x 18"). Paper clips, pins, knife, pencils. Rags or paper towels ( Acrylic paint does not wash off clothes therefore choose appropriate studio clothing). |
Week 1 (August 23):
Lecture: Introduction to course and explanation of
materials.
Week 2 (August 30):
Studio work: Painting: Working from the still life #1 (5%).
Monochromatic, mixing and various sketching techniques. (Explore the relationship between figure and ground).
Week 3 (September 6):
Studio work: Painting: Working from the still life (5%).
Monochromatic and analagous paintings (link)
Week 4 (September 13):
Studio work: Monochromatic painting (10%). On one or
two sheets of mayfair (you can prepare them with a ground at home; hint: bring
your camera to class) paint the still life that is set up in the studio.
Use
black, white and one colour to create a monochromatic depiction of the still
life. (Explore representational approaches to painting by working from observation )
Home Assignment #1 Colour wheel (5%)(.pdf) and introduction to colour wheel.
Week 5 (September 20):
Studio work: Painting a Still life (10%). (Explore colour relationships such as hue, value, intensity through painting. You can prepare them with a ground at home; hint: bring
your camera to class)
Week 6 (September 27):
Studio work: Working in colour from the still life (10% on canvas or larger scale)
Week 7 (October 4, Mid-term assessment):
Studio Work: Continuing working in colour from the still life.
Home Assignment #2: Small Self Portrait (5%). Look at the history of figure painting in the library and on the internet. Paint or draw a small self-portrait from a mirror (not a photograph).
Week 8 (October 18):
Lecture and Slideshow: Non affirmative painting (Analyze contemporary and historical paintings in relation to themes covered in class .Explore representational and non-representational approaches to painting )
Colour Painting
due.
Small self-portrait due.
Critique of colour painting.
Week 9 (October 25):
Painting or museum visit.
Week 10 (November 1):
Painting the
human figure:
Studio work: Painting model in class (20%)
(Explore representational approaches to painting by working from the figure)
Week 11 (November 8):
Studio work: Painting in class: Model.
Week 12 (November 15):
Painting
from model due.
Major Assignment 1
due.
Lecture: Walter Benjamin : what place does all this occupy in
the studio?
(concerning the ever-changing developments in technologies. It’s relation
to philosophy in terms of art, ethics, science and society. How has technology
changed images? Conceptual images, cinema).
Studio: Major painting assignment. The Elements (20%) Other techniques - collage, impasto (Explore techniques such as glazing, scumbling, underpainting, drybrush, and alla prima)
Week 13 (November 22):
Studio work: Colour exercise in class.
Divide a sheet of mayfair paper to four areas. Paint a simple still life using analagous colour (neighbour colours), warm/cool colour, complementary colours
Complete at home and submit on week 14.

Major painting assignment continues.
Week 15 (December 6):
Major Assignment 2
due.
Colour Assignment
due.
Finishing up...Final critical evaluation of work completed to date!
